Legend of Malobiannah
The Maliseet legend of Malobiannah is well known in Acadie, particularly in the Madawaska region of Northwest New Brunswick. It is said that this young Native girl succeeded in saving her tribe’s villages from a Mohawk raid by guiding their canoes straight into the waterfall at Grand Falls, where they all perished. Different artists have made this theme part of their work. For instance, the young woman is a character in Rino Morin Rossignol’s play Le pique-nique.
