There was a time when being an Acadian meant being a Francophone and being a Catholic and that’s still very much important to especially the older generation, but things have evolved quite a lot since the 1960s in Vatican council II and now-a-days you don’t hear talk about that as much especially the Catholic part of it. Being Catholic for many people is not as important for Acadian identity as it was in the past, especially not among the young people today, because many young people don’t go to church anymore. Well most of the Acadians here in Prince Edward Island today are those of Acadian background don’t speak French. Assimilation has started over 100 years ago and there are some Acadian communities that have been totally anglicised, so for some people it’s true that if they don’t speak French they’re not considered Acadian.
