My name is Gordon Wayne Doucet and we are in Quinan and I was born in 1953, been here, living here all my life. Today we’re gonna go see some snares that I set a couple days ago, rabbit snares. Like many other people my brothers were instrumental in teaching me how to hunt, set snares and you know fishing on the river and stuff. Hunting, instrumental in my life well it’s been very instrumental because my early life here was almost totally that, we lived off the land and fishing from the river gaspareau, eels, trout, we salted a lot of that stuff in barrels for the winter. Also hunting, hunting was the way that you filled the barrels for the winter, a lot of meat would go into preserves, jars and stuff like that but normally you shot a deer it didn’t last long, we were 11 in the family, it didn’t last long. Ok so here we’re off this beaten path and I got a few snares down here and we’re gonna go see, we’ll probably have something here good paths. Here. There’s another small one, they’re small this year but this year’s crop. I’ll get that out of there, sometimes they get tangled up pretty good.

So when did you set this snare?
Day before yesterday on the snow and since then we had about 30 to 40 millimetres of rain all the snow is gone but these few paths here are paths that are good every year, you set a snare here you’re just about guaranteed to have a rabbit if there’s any left after the coyote has been through. There you go, nice young rabbit, that’s going to be made into a great stew. Set this snare up again, rabbits make themselves nice paths and as the winter approaches they’ll chew themselves fresh paths, they’re pretty easy to find and you look for the fresh chewings, yeah that’s how you find them. Put a snare or two you’re bound to get them and this I’m using thin steel wire that is kind of a new thing now, it used to be brass or you know soft iron wire but now it’s stainless steel wire really good stuff, you can leave it in the woods year after year come back and re-set it, it’s hard to break, really really good snares. There, that will be for the next big one that comes through. Put something over that so it doesn’t jump over it. There you go. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, 7 rabbits.
